They sit in the central Pacific Ocean. Most of these islands are part of Kiribati. Three islands belong to the United States. These are Jarvis Island, Kingman Reef, and Palmyra Atoll.

All these islands were made by volcanoes. They form one of the longest island chains in the world.

Some islands have people living on them. Kiritimati, Tabuaeran, and Teraina have permanent residents. People there sell things like seaweed and pet fish. Long ago, whaling ships visited to find wood and water. Archaeologists found old village sites on many islands. These sites are from as far back as the 14th century.

The islands are also special because of time. The International Date Line passes through them. This means some islands are in the earliest time zone. Because of this, they are among the first places to see the sun rise. One island, Millennium Island, saw the sunrise on January 1, 2000. Kiritimati is a very large atoll. It has the largest land area of any atoll in the world.
