It sits halfway between the Hawaiian Islands and American Samoa. The reef has a triangle shape. Most of it stays under the water. Only two tiny strips of land stay above the sea. These strips are made of coral rubble and clam shells.

The reef is a very busy place for sea life. There are hundreds of kinds of fish and coral. Many types of stony coral live here. This is more than three times the amount found in Hawaii.

Many sharks live in these waters. They are top hunters in the reef. This makes the food chain very active. Green sea turtles also visit the reef to eat and rest.

In the past, planes used the reef to stop during long flights. Today, the United States protects it. It is a national wildlife refuge. This helps keep the ocean life safe.
