They are part of a country called Kiribati. This group has eight atolls. An atoll is a ring of coral that surrounds a lagoon. There are also two coral reefs under the water.

Most of these islands have no people living on them. Only a few families live on Kanton Island.

Kanton is a narrow strip of land. It has a large lagoon full of life. You can find sharks, tuna, and eels there. Many birds and lizards also live on the land.

Other islands look very different. Manra has coconut palms and forests.

Nikumaroro has many green plants. Some islands, like McKean, have no trees at all. McKean is home to 85,000 birds!

In the past, people lived on these islands a long time ago. Later, some people tried to build towns there. They had to leave because it was hard to find fresh water. Today, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area keeps the islands safe. It is one of the largest protected areas in the world. It helps 120 types of coral and 500 types of fish stay healthy.
