The Phoenix Islands are a special group of islands in the central Pacific Ocean.

They sit east of the Gilbert Islands and west of the Line Islands. This group is part of the Republic of Kiribati. It includes eight atolls and two reefs that stay under the water. An atoll is a ring of coral that holds a lagoon inside. Most of these islands are empty of people. Only a few families live on Kanton Island, which is the northernmost island.

Kanton is a narrow strip of land with a large lagoon. This lagoon is full of life, with sharks, tuna, and eels swimming in the water.

Nature is very different on each island in this group. Some places are green and full of plants. Manra has coconut palms and scrub forests. Nikumaroro also has many coconut palms and thick plants.

Other islands are much more bare. McKean Island has no trees and no fresh water at all. It is covered in low herbs and grasses. This island is a huge home for birds. It has up to 85,000 lesser frigatebirds living there. Rawaki Island is also mostly treeless, but it has special freshwater pools. These are the only freshwater wetlands in the whole Phoenix Islands group.

People have a long history with these islands. Very long ago, around 1000 BC, people may have lived there. Scientists found stone tools on Manra and Orona. These tools show that different groups of people traveled from places like Samoa and Micronesia. Later, in the 1800s, whaling ships visited the area. These ships helped map the islands between 1821 and 1825. The islands got their name around the 1840s. This name likely came from the many whaling ships named Phoenix that sailed nearby.

In the late 1930s, the British tried to help people move to the islands. This was called the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme. They tried to build villages on islands like Manra and Nikumaroro. Nikumaroro even had wide streets made of coral. However, life on the islands was very hard. The islands often had droughts, which means there was not enough rain. People also struggled to find enough fresh water to drink. Because of these hard times, most people had to leave by 1963.

Today, the islands are part of a huge protected area. The Phoenix Islands Protected Area was started in 2008. It is one of the largest protected areas in the whole world. This helps keep the ocean life safe and healthy. About 120 species of coral live in these waters. There are also more than 500 different species of fish. By protecting these islands, we help the many birds and sea creatures that call them home.
