Papeete has a long and interesting history. In 1902, workers had to move the post office. They used a small railway to move the whole building. They also used a light railway to move water. This helped build a water tower that holds 150,000 litres. During World War I, German ships shelled the city. This caused damage and loss of life. Later, the city grew when France moved nuclear tests to nearby atolls. This change helped the local economy and airport grow.
