It is an overseas collectivity of France. This means it is part of France but sits far away in the ocean. The area is made of 121 different islands and atolls. These islands are spread out over a huge space. They are divided into five main groups. These groups are the Austral Islands, the Gambier Islands, the Marquesas Islands, the Society Islands, and the Tuamotus.

Many people live in these islands. As of September 2025, there were 282,596 people living there. Most people, about 205,000, live in the Society Islands. One island in this group is very important. It is called Tahiti. Tahiti is the most crowded island in the whole area. Almost 69% of all the people live on Tahiti. The capital city is Papeete, which is located on Tahiti.

The history of these islands began a very long time ago. Around 1500 BC, people began the Great Polynesian Migration. These travelers used the stars to find their way across the sea. They first settled the Marquesas Islands around 200 BC. Later, they found the Society Islands around AD 300. Many years later, European explorers began to visit. Ferdinand Magellan saw Puka-Puka in 1521. Later, explorers like James Cook visited Tahiti in the 1700s.

France began to take control of the islands in 1842. At first, they called the area the French Establishments of Oceania. In 1946, the status changed to an overseas territory. This change gave Polynesians the right to vote. In 1957, the name was changed to French Polynesia. The islands have also seen difficult times. For many years, France used some islands for nuclear testing. The last test happened on 27 January 1996.
