It is located in the South Pacific Ocean. This territory consists of 121 geographically dispersed islands and atolls. These landmasses cover a vast area of the ocean. The territory is also associated with the European Union. It holds the status of an overseas country and territory (OCT). This means it has a unique relationship with Europe. The archipelago is divided into five distinct island groups. These are the Austral Islands and the Gambier Islands. The third group is the Marquesas Islands. The fourth is the Tuamotus. The fifth group is the Society Islands.

The Society Islands include the Leeward and Windward Islands. This group is very important for the population. At least 205,000 people live within these specific islands. The island of Tahiti is the most populous. It is home to nearly 69% of the total population. The capital city, Papeete, is located on Tahiti.

The history of the region began with the Great Polynesian Migration. Anthropologists believe this journey started around 1500 BC. Austronesian peoples used celestial navigation to find islands. They used the stars to guide their way across the sea. The Marquesas Islands were the first to be settled around 200 BC. Later, Polynesians discovered the Society Islands around AD 300. These early settlers moved southwest to find new homes. This migration shaped the culture of the entire Pacific region.

European explorers arrived hundreds of years after the migration. Ferdinand Magellan sighted Puka-Puka in 1521. He was a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain. In 1606, Pedro Fernandes de Queirós sighted an inhabited island. This was likely Rekareka, southeast of Tahiti. Later, the Dutchman Jakob Roggeveen charted several islands in 1722. He found two islands in the Society Islands, including Bora Bora.

British explorer Samuel Wallis visited Tahiti in 1767. James Cook also arrived in 1769 to observe the transit of Venus. These encounters changed the course of local history.

French involvement began in the mid-19th century. In 1842, France established a protectorate. They called it the French Establishments of Oceania (EFO). This was done to allow Catholic missionaries to work. In 1880, France changed Tahiti's status to a colony. This followed the annexation of the islands. The islands were not officially united until 1889. There were many conflicts, such as the Leewards War. This conflict lasted until 1897. In 1957, the territory was renamed French Polynesia.

Political status changed significantly during the 20th century. In 1946, the EFO became an overseas territory. Polynesians were granted citizenship and the right to vote. During World War II, many Polynesians served in the Free French Forces. They served in North Africa and parts of Italy.

In 2003, it became an overseas collectivity. It gained administrative autonomy through specific laws. This autonomy includes the title of President of French Polynesia. The territory is now a parliamentary representative democratic system.

The territory has also experienced periods of scientific testing. In 1962, France moved its nuclear testing sites. They chose the Moruroa atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago. Tests were conducted underground after 1974. There was widespread protest when testing resumed in 1995. The last nuclear test occurred on 27 January 1996. Following this, France joined the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty. This ended nuclear testing in the region. In 2013, the United Nations relisted the territory. This makes it eligible for an independence referendum.

Today, governance is managed through a multi-party system. The President of French Polynesia is the head of government. Legislative power belongs to the government and the Assembly. Politics saw instability between the mid-2000s and mid-2010s. This involved leaders like Gaston Flosse and Oscar Temaru. They represented different views on independence. Despite these political shifts, the islands remain a major destination. People visit to see the lagoons and reefs.
