The first humans arrived a long time ago. They were part of the Lapita culture. The Lapita were skilled at sailing and farming. They built their first settlements near the coast. These settlements began between 1100 BC and AD 200.

European explorers arrived much later. James Cook was one of the first to see the islands. He arrived on 4 September 1774. He named the land New Caledonia. He thought the northeast looked like Scotland.

In 1853, France took formal control of the islands. France used the islands as a penal colony for a while. From the 1860s to 1897, they sent many prisoners there. About 22,000 criminals and political prisoners were sent to the islands. In 1864, people found nickel in the ground. This discovery led to large mining operations.

During World War II, New Caledonia became a very important place. It served as a major base for the United States Navy.

The fleet based in Nouméa helped turn back the Japanese Navy. This happened during the Battle of the Coral Sea in 1942. Many American troops lived on the islands during this time. Their numbers were as high as 50,000 people. This was as many people as lived in the territory then. Today, the islands remain a unique part of France.
