It is the capital of the French territory called New Caledonia. The city sits on a hilly peninsula on the main island, Grande Terre.

It features a deepwater harbour that helps many ships come and go. This makes it the main port for the whole island. Nouméa is also the largest city in Oceania where people speak French. It is a busy place that connects many different islands and lands.

The city has a tropical savanna climate with distinct seasons. The summers are hot, especially in January, February, and March. During these months, the average high temperature is about 30 degrees Celsius. The winters are much warmer and cooler, around 23 degrees Celsius in July. September and October are the dry months of the year. The rest of the time, the city is quite wet. This weather helps shape the life and the plants of the region.

Nouméa has a long and busy history. A British trader named James Paddon first settled nearby in 1851. Three years later, the French started a settlement and called it Port-de-France. They changed the name to Nouméa in 1866. The area was once used as a penal colony for prisoners. Later, it became a place to send out nickel and gold from local mines. From 1904 to 1940, a railway connected the city to Païta and Dumbéa.

Many different groups of people call this city home.

People from Europe, Polynesia, Indonesia, and Vietnam live here. There are also many Melanesians and indigenous Kanaks. Most people in the area speak French. Many people also speak Kanak languages. The city has seen changes in its number of residents recently. In 2024, riots caused damage to many businesses in the city. Because of this, the 2025 census showed a decline in the population. The Greater Nouméa area had 173,814 people in April 2025.

There are many places to learn and explore in the city. The University of New Caledonia has about 3,000 students.
