The weather is often hot and wet. Heavy rain falls on the land quite often. The air feels very humid there. Coral reefs grow all around the islands. Most of the reefs are solid. The only break in the reef is at Leava. This is the main town in the islands.

People have lived here for a very long time. The first settlers arrived in the 8th century BCE. Tongans tried to settle Futuna in the 1500s. They were repelled and did not stay. Samoans settled the islands in the 17th century. Later, Dutch explorers arrived in 1616. They were the first Europeans to visit.

They named the islands after the city of Hoorn. This was the city where their trip began.

Many years passed as the islands changed. French Catholic missionaries arrived in 1837. They stayed there permanently. By 1846, the people had become Catholics. King Lavelua asked for a French protectorate in 1842. The islands were part of New Caledonia until 1961. Now they belong to the Wallis and Futuna territory. This became a French collectivity in 2003.
