Willem Schouten was a famous Dutch navigator. He was born around 1567 in a town called Hoorn.

He spent much of his life on the sea. In 1601, he was a skipper for a ship named Duyfken. He even took part in the Battle of Bantam. Schouten was a man who knew how to lead others. His many years at sea helped him become a skilled explorer.

In 1615, Schouten went on a very important journey. He sailed with his younger brother, Jan Schouten. They left a place called Texel in the Netherlands. This trip was led by Jacob Le Maire. They had two ships named Eendracht and Hoorn.

The goal was to find a new path to the Spice Islands. They wanted to avoid the trade rules of the Dutch East India Company. This company had a monopoly on that trade route.

Finding a new way was a very hard job. In 1616, the ships found a way around Cape Horn. Schouten named the cape after his lost ship, the Hoorn. He also named the Le Maire Strait after a man. Sadly, his brother Jan died during this voyage in March 1616.

Schouten then sailed across the Pacific Ocean. He saw many small islands along his path. These included islands in the Tuamotu and Tonga groups.

Schouten saw many different places during his long trip. He visited islands like Puka-Puka and Manihi. He also saw islands in the Wallis and Futuna groups. He sailed near New Guinea and saw the Schouten Islands. Finally, he reached Ternate in September 1616. The ship Eendracht returned to the Netherlands in July 1617.

The Dutch East India Company was not happy. They claimed he broke their trade rules. They even arrested him in Java.

Schouten's travels were written down in a journal. This book was published in Amsterdam in 1618. It was later translated into French, English, and German. Many people read about his wonderful voyage.

His maps were very useful for other sailors. A man named Abel Tasman used them later. Tasman used the maps to explore the north coast of New Guinea. Schouten died in 1625 near the coast of Madagascar.
