He was born in 1659 in a place called Middelburg. His father, Arend Roggeveen, was a very smart man. Arend studied math, stars, and maps. He even wanted to find a mythical land called Terra Australis. Jacob eventually carried out this dream of exploration. He was a doctor of law from the University of Harderwijk.

Before his big trip, he worked for a large company in Batavia. Batavia is a city we now call Jakarta.

In 1721, Jacob led a large expedition across the sea. He worked with the Dutch West India Company to plan it. He had his brother, Jan Roggeveen, helping him plan. The fleet had three ships named the Arend, the Thienhoven, and the Afrikaansche Galey.

There were 223 men on the crew. They wanted to find Terra Australis and a new trade path. They hoped to find a way to the Spice Islands. This would help them trade goods in the East Indies.

The journey took them through many different places. First, they sailed to the Falkland Islands. Jacob gave those islands a new name, Belgia Australis. They passed through the Strait of Le Maire. Then they entered the huge Pacific Ocean. They even visited the Juan Fernández Islands for several weeks. They also landed near Valdivia, Chile. The ships moved through many waters to reach these far places.

Jacob found several islands during his travels. On Easter Sunday, April 5, 1722, he found Easter Island. He saw between 2,000 and 3,000 people living there.

He was also the first European to find Samoa. He found Bora Bora and Maupiti in the Society Islands too. He mapped many islands in the Tuamotu Archipelago. However, the trip was not always easy or safe. One ship, the Afrikaansche Galey, was lost at Takapoto atoll. At Makatea, a fight happened between the crew and the local people. Ten crew members died during this hard time.

After the long trip, the ships reached Batavia in 1722. Jacob was arrested there by the Dutch East Indies Company. They said he broke their rules about trading. He had to go through a long lawsuit in the Netherlands. Eventually, the company had to pay him for his losses. They also had to pay his crew. Jacob lived until January 1729. His life shows how much people wanted to learn about our world.
