He studied many things like biology, plants, and maps. He was especially interested in how animals and people move between different places. As a young boy, he even made a small museum in his home. He used a common adder snake as the main attraction. This early interest led him to study at the University of Oslo. He wanted to understand the secrets of the natural world and ancient history.

In 1947, Heyerdahl led a very famous journey called the Kon-Tiki expedition.

He and five other people built a raft from balsa wood. They wanted to see if ancient people could travel across the sea. They drifted for 101 days across the huge Pacific Ocean. The raft traveled 8,000 km from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. During this trip, the raft eventually smashed into a reef at Raroia. This voyage proved that primitive rafts could indeed cross great distances.

Heyerdahl did not stop after his first big adventure. In 1970, he went on the Ra II expedition.

He sailed a boat made from papyrus reeds. This boat traveled from the west coast of Africa to Barbados. He also spent time studying the famous Easter Island.

He led a scientific team there between 1955 and 1956. They studied how people carved and moved the large stone statues called moai. He even tried to recreate how those heavy stones were moved.

His ideas about history were often very different from other scientists.

He believed that different ancient cultures might have met by crossing oceans. He thought people from South America might have reached Polynesia long ago. Some scientists did not agree with his ideas at the time. However, his work made many people think about the past in new ways. He even suggested that different groups of people lived on Easter Island at different times. He used oral histories and old ruins to support his theories.

Today, we remember Heyerdahl through his many books and films.

His book about the Kon-Tiki raft has been translated into 71 languages. A movie about his journey even won an Academy Award in 1951. His many papers and diaries are now kept in special archives.
