He was a chieftain of the Tupinambá people. This group lived along the coast. Their lands stretched from Cabo Frio to Bertioga. He lived in a village in Iperoig. This place is near modern Ubatuba. He was a very important person to his people. He helped guide them through many changes.

Cunhambebe was a strong military leader. He was the elected chief of the Tamoyo Confederation. This was a group of tribes from the coast. They joined together to fight the Portuguese colonists. The Tamoyo tribes also worked with French invaders. These French forces were led by Nicolas Durand de Villegaignon. This period of history is called France Antarctique.

History tells us about his family and his enemies. A sailor named Hans Staden was a prisoner of Cunhambebe's father. This happened between the years 1554 and 1557. Staden was a German man who traveled the seas. The Tupinambá were known as fierce warriors.

This made life very hard for those who fought them. The tribes fought the Portuguese for a long time. They fought until the Peace of Iperoig in 1567.

Two priests tried to bring peace to the land. Their names were Manoel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta. They visited the village of Cunhambebe to talk. It was a very risky trip for them. Anchieta spoke the Tupi language very well. This helped him talk to the people. Because of his skill, they were not killed. He helped make a peace treaty that Cunhambebe respected.

The peace did not stay for long. A Portuguese knight named D. Estácio de Sá led an attack. He wanted to remove the French invaders. The Tamoyo tribes helped the Frenchmen during this fight. They felt the Portuguese had betrayed them. Also, the Temimino tribes fought with the Portuguese. These tribes were old enemies of the Tamoyo. After 1563, Cunhambebe died from the bubonic plague.
