The Tupi people were one of the largest groups of indigenous people in Brazil.

They belonged to the Tupi-Guarani linguistic families. Long ago, they lived in the Amazon rainforest. About 2,900 years ago, they began to move southward. By 1,000 years ago, they lived along the Atlantic coast of Southeast Brazil. They were very skilled at farming many different things. They grew maize, beans, peanuts, and sweet potatoes. They also grew squash, cotton, and cassava.

Life for the Tupi was organized into many different tribes. Each tribe had between 300 and 2,000 people. Some of these tribes included the Tupinambá and the Tupiniquim. Other groups were the Potiguara, Tabajara, Caeté, Tamoios, and Temiminó. Even though they spoke a common language, they did not have one single identity. They believed they all came from a mythological figure named Tupi.

Their religion included a figure named Tupã, which represented thunder. This was a manifestation of the god Nhanderuvuçu.

In the year 1500, the Tupi population was about 1 million people. This was almost as many people as lived in Portugal at that time. However, Portuguese settlers soon arrived in Brazil. The settlers began to change Tupi life in many ways. They built villages called aldeias to teach the Tupi new customs. The Portuguese also used the Tupi as laborers on plantations. Sadly, the settlers brought new diseases from other parts of the world. These diseases spread quickly and nearly wiped out the Tupi people.

During this time, a process called cunhadismo began to happen. This was an old native tradition of welcoming strangers. The Tupi would offer a native woman as a wife to a stranger. This made the stranger part of the tribe's family. Because many Portuguese settlers were men, they often married indigenous women. This led to the growth of a mixed-race population called mamelucos.

This mixing helped the Portuguese stay and grow in the new land.

Even though many Tupi people died, their culture left a huge mark on Brazil. Many people in Brazil today have Tupi ancestors. The Tupi language even influenced how people spoke for a long time. A language called Nheengatu was used widely until the 1700s. Today, many Brazilian words come from the Tupi language. We use Tupi words for animals like the arara, or macaw. We also use Tupi words for food like abacaxi, or pineapple.
