Sydney wants to make sure these tribes are safe and respected. He is a leading expert on these groups.

Sydney's work often involves traveling into the deep jungle. He leads many expeditions to find isolated tribes. His aim is to protect them from outsiders. Sometimes, he works to bring peace between groups. For example, he helped restore peace with the Korubo Indians. Before this, there had been conflict with FUNAI officials.

Sydney started his career many years ago. He helped the Villas Boas brothers with their work. He worked near the Xingu River area. In the late 1980s, he helped the Arara people. This happened after conflict near the Trans-Amazonian Highway. The Arara people suffered from new diseases. This sad event changed how Sydney thought about helping tribes.

In 1987, Sydney became a director for a new department. This group was called the Department of Indigenous in Isolation. He worked with another official named Gilberto Pinto Figueiredo. This new department was very successful. It doubled the size of protected Indigenous land in Brazil.

Sydney has received many great honors for his life of service. In 1998, he received the Bartolomeu de las Casas award. The United Nations named him "Hero of the year" in 2001. Time Kids Magazine called him a "Hero of the Planet." He also won a gold medal from the Royal Geographical Society.

Even now, Sydney continues to defend these tribes. He works with a group called the Instituto Indigenista Interamericano. He often speaks up about the safety of Indigenous lands. He has criticized leaders when they allow illegal invasions. He wants to ensure a better future for all Indigenous Brazilians. His story shows how one person can work for change.
