Euclides da Cunha was a very important thinker from Brazil.

He worked as a journalist, a sociologist, and an engineer. He was born on January 20, 1866, in Cantagalo. His grandparents came from Portugal. He spent his early years in Rio de Janeiro. Later, he studied at the Escola Politécnica. He also attended a military school called Escola Militar da Praia Vermelha. He was once expelled from that school for a protest. However, he was allowed back into the school in 1889.

Cunha spent much of his life studying how the world works. He left the army in 1896 to study civil engineering. In 1897, he went on a big trip to the Sertão. The Sertão is the backland area of Brazil. He went there as a war correspondent for a newspaper. He wanted to write about the War of Canudos. This war involved the government and a group of peasants. The peasants were led by a man named Antonio Conselheiro. Cunha saw the fighting between August 7 and October 1.

His writing helped people understand the different parts of Brazil. He wrote a famous book called Os Sertões. This book tells the true story of the rebellion in the backlands. Many famous writers liked his work. For example, Robert Lowell thought it was better than books by Tolstoy. The book was even translated into English in 1944. Cunha also wrote about rubber tappers in the Amazon. He did this after a trip on the Purus River in 1904. That trip helped Brazil and Peru decide on a border.

Cunha had many honors during his life. In 1903, he joined the Brazilian Academy of Letters. He also joined the Historical and Geographic Institute. He held the 7th chair in the Academy until he died. In 1909, he became a professor of Logic at a school in Rio. This school was called Colégio Pedro II. He also wrote many essays and news articles. Some of his news articles were later published in books. His work helped shape how people saw the coast and the interior of Brazil.

His life ended in a very sad way in 1909.

He had a difficult conflict with a man named Dilermando de Assis. This happened after Cunha learned about an affair involving his wife, Ana Emília. There was a fight between them in August 1909. During the struggle, Cunha was shot and died at age 43. A jury decided the other man acted in self-defense. Even with this sad ending, his books remain important. Many authors still use his ideas to write new stories today.
