He was born in Buenos Aires in 1886 to a wealthy family. His father, Manuel Güiraldes, was a cultured man and a mayor. Ricardo loved art and used to paint with oils.

As a young child, he lived in Paris for four years. By age six, he spoke Spanish, French, and German. French was actually his first language. This early time in Europe helped shape his writing style.

Much of his life was spent between the city and the country. He spent time at a family ranch called La Porteña. In San Antonio de Areco, he met the gauchos. Gauchos are people who live and work in the rural country. He met a man named Segundo Ramírez there. This man became the basis for a famous character. Güiraldes loved the country life very much. He wrote many books about the world of the gauchos.

Becoming a writer was not always easy for him. He studied law and architecture but never practiced them. He even tried several different businesses without success. In 1915, he published stories called Cuentos de muerte y de sangre. When these books did not sell well, he felt discouraged. He even threw his unsold books into a well.

Luckily, his wife Adelina rescued some of the water-damaged copies. Today, collectors value those rescued books very highly.

He traveled to many far-off places in his life. He visited Italy, Greece, Egypt, Japan, and China. In 1923, he wrote a travel story called Xaimaca. Later, he became a leader for new, modern writers. He helped start a magazine called Proa in 1924. He also worked on a magazine called Martín Fierro. His most famous novel, Don Segundo Sombra, was finished in 1926. This book helped make him a very well-known author.

In his later years, he looked for spiritual peace. He became interested in Eastern philosophy and Hinduism. Sadly, he became sick with Hodgkin's disease in 1927. He died in Paris at the home of a friend. His body was brought back to Argentina for burial.
