Jules Supervielle was a very famous writer and poet. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on January 16, 1884. He was a Franco-Uruguayan writer who used many different styles. He wrote beautiful poems, short stories, and even plays for the stage. People loved his work so much that he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature three times. He was even called the "Prince of Poets" near the end of his life.

Jules began his journey with words at a very young age. He started writing fables when he was only nine years old. In 1894, he moved to Paris to live with his aunt and uncle. By 1901, he had already published a book of poems called Brumes du passé. He later wrote many other important books. One famous collection of poems is called Gravitations, published in 1925. He also wrote a novel called L'Homme de la pampa in 1923.

His life had many different chapters and changes. His parents both died while he was still a baby. He grew up with his grandmother and then with his aunt and uncle. During the First World War, he served in the military until 1917. Later, during the Second World War, he had some health and money troubles. Because of this, he moved back to Uruguay for a short time. He eventually returned to France to work as a reporter.

Jules was very successful in the world of art and books. He won several literary prizes during his long career. He was even named an Officier de la Legion d'honneur. In 1947, his play Shéhérazade was performed at the first festival d'Avignon. Many other writers, like René Char and Francis Ponge, were influenced by his unique way of writing. He did not like a style called surrealism or a method called automatic writing. Instead, he helped start new ways of writing poetry.

Today, many people still remember the work of Jules Supervielle. In 1990, the city of Oloron-Sainte-Marie started the Jules-Supervielle Prize. Many great modern poets have won this special award. His complete poems were even collected in a famous set of books called the Bibliothèque de La Pléiade. In Uruguay, a school called the Lycée Français de Montevideo carries his name. His poems have even been turned into music by Maurice Jaubert.
