Saint-John Perse was a famous French poet and writer.

He was born Alexis Leger in 1887. He was born on the island of Guadeloupe in the West Indies. He loved the natural world around him. He spent much of his time hiking and sailing in the Atlantic Ocean. He also had a special interest in birds, which is called ornithology. These early experiences with nature helped shape his unique way of writing.

His writing often used very strong and bright images.

In his first book of poetry, called *Éloges*, he wrote about his childhood home. He used poems to remember a world that was changing or disappearing. He described old houses being taken over by the jungle. He wrote about how only poetry could keep these memories alive. This style of writing was very personal and often felt like a dream. He wanted to capture the universe through his words.

Leger lived a life of great travel and change. He moved from Guadeloupe to Pau, France, in 1899. Later, he began a career as a diplomat. A diplomat is someone who works for their government in other countries. He lived in Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Between 1916 and 1921, he lived in Peking, China. While there, he lived in a former Taoist temple. He even traveled across the huge Gobi desert.

While living in China, he wrote a very long poem called *Anabase*.

He chose to use the name Saint-John Perse for this work. This was a pseudonym, which is a name a writer uses instead of their real one. He used this name for the rest of his life. His work was noticed by many famous people. The writer Marcel Proust even praised his early talent. Other great poets like T. S. Eliot also liked his powerful style.

His life combined the world of art with the world of politics. He worked as an assistant to the French Prime Minister, Aristide Briand. This job meant he helped with important meetings between different countries. He was involved in talks like the Treaty of Locarno in 1925. Even with his busy job, he never stopped being a writer. In 1960, he received the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is one of the highest honors a writer can ever win.
