A diplomat is someone who represents their country to others. He worked for the Greek Foreign Service for many years. This job took him to many different places. He lived and worked in England, Albania, and Turkey. He even served as the Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1957 to 1962. His life was full of both writing and official service. He was a very important part of Greek culture in the 20th century.

Seferis was born in Smyrna in the Ottoman Empire. His father, Stelios Seferiadis, was a lawyer and a poet. His family moved to Athens in 1914. Later, Seferis studied law at the Sorbonne in Paris. During his time in France, his childhood home of Smyrna was taken by the Turkish Army. His family had to flee from Asia Minor. This feeling of being an exile stayed with him for a long time. It became a main part of his poetry and his interest in the story of Odysseus.

His career in diplomacy was long and successful. He joined the Royal Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1926. During the Second World War, he traveled with the Free Greek Government. He visited places like Crete, Egypt, South Africa, and Italy. He later served in Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Iraq. In 1953, he visited the island of Cyprus for the first time. He loved the island because it reminded him of his childhood home. This feeling of homecoming inspired his book of poems, Imerologio Katastromatos III.

In 1963, Seferis won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This is a very special award for writers. He was the first person from Greece to win it. He was nominated for the prize four times in total. Other famous writers like T. S. Eliot nominated him. In his speech, he spoke about being human. He mentioned how the character Oedipus answered a riddle with the word "Man." Seferis believed that being human helps us face hard things.

Later in life, Seferis stood up for what he believed in. In 1969, he spoke against a harsh government in Greece. He said on the BBC that a wrong situation must end. Because of this, many people saw him as a hero. He died in Athens in 1971. Even after he died, his work stayed very important. His poems were used during the 2004 Athens Olympic Games. Many musicians and writers still use his words today to honor him.
