He was born Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto on July 12, 1904. He began writing poems when he was only 13 years old. He published his first essay in a local newspaper that year. He used the pen name Pablo Neruda to sign his work. This name might have come from a Czech poet or a violinist.

His writing included many styles like love poems and political works. His book, *Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair*, is a huge success. It is still the best-selling poetry book in the Spanish language today.

Neruda’s life was full of many different jobs. He worked as a diplomat in many far-away countries. He served as an ambassador to France under President Salvador Allende. He also worked as a senator for the Chilean Communist Party. One of his most important jobs was helping people. He helped 2,000 Spanish refugees travel to Chile on a ship called the *Winnipeg*.

This mission was something he called his noblest task. He used his position to help people escaping from war.

His writing often showed his strong political beliefs. He was a communist who cared about justice for many people. In his poem "United Fruit Company," he wrote about big corporations. He called them "bloodthirsty flies" to show they were hurting people. He used many tools like metaphors and symbols in his poems. These tools helped him explain how powerful companies could be.

His poems were not just about beauty, but also about the world.

Neruda faced many hard and sad moments in his life. He had one daughter named Malva Marina Reyes. She had severe health problems and died when she was eight years old.

He also faced trouble with the law in Chile. In 1948, the government outlawed communism and wanted to arrest him. He had to hide for months before escaping to Argentina. He lived in many places like Burma, Singapore, and Spain during his life.

In 1971, Neruda won the Nobel Prize in Literature. This is one of the highest honors a writer can receive.

He read his work to 70,000 people at the Estadio Nacional. Neruda died in September 1973 at his home in Isla Negra. There has been much discussion about how he died. Some people believed he was killed by others during a time of political change. However, other tests suggested he died from cancer. He remains the national poet of Chile today.
