Carlos Fuentes was a famous Mexican novelist and essayist. He was also a diplomat who represented Mexico in France. Many people call him one of the most admired writers in the Spanish-speaking world. He was a leading figure in the Latin American Boom. This was a huge explosion of literature from Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s. His books helped people all over the world understand Mexican history and identity.

Fuentes loved the simple way of writing. He said he was a pre-modern writer. He used only pens, ink, and paper to create his stories. He did not want fancy tools or a special recipe for success. Instead, he always asked a simple question before he began. He asked, "Who am I writing for?" This helped him connect his words to his readers.

His life was full of travel and many different cultures. He was born in Panama City in 1928. His father was a Mexican diplomat. Because of his father's job, Carlos lived in many capital cities. He lived in Washington, D.C., from 1934 to 1940. He also lived in Santiago, Chile. These experiences helped him see Latin America as a critical outsider.

Fuentes wrote many important books during his long career. His first novel, Where the Air Is Clear, was published in 1958. It became a big success right away. In 1962, he wrote The Death of Artemio Cruz. This book is a very famous work of modern literature. It uses many different narrators to tell a story. It also uses techniques from movies, like flashbacks.

He received many honors for his talent. He won the Miguel de Cervantes Prize. He also won Mexico's highest award, the Belisario Domínguez Medal of Honor, in 1999. His book The Old Gringo was a bestseller in the United States. Many people thought he might even win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He passed away on May 15, 2012.
