Cavafy was a perfectionist who worked very hard on his craft. He did not want to publish his poems in big books. Instead, he shared them through local magazines or newspapers. Sometimes he printed them himself on broadsheets to give to friends. He would spend a long time refining every single line. He wanted every word to be exactly right. This careful way of working made his poetry very special.
