This book became a very popular movie in 1964. He also wrote *The Last Temptation of Christ*, which became a movie in 1988.

Kazantzakis had a very busy way of working. He often used the way common people spoke, called Demotic Greek. At that time, many writers used a "pure" style called Katharevousa. He wanted his writing to sound like real people. He used the local words and sayings he heard while traveling. This helped him capture the true spirit of the Greek people. He wanted to show that common language could make great art.

His life was full of learning and travel. He was born in 1883 in Crete. At that time, Crete was ruled by the Ottoman Empire. He studied law in Athens from 1902 to 1906. Later, he went to the Sorbonne in Paris to study philosophy. There, he learned from a thinker named Henri Bergson. This teaching helped shape his ideas about the world. He spent much of his life traveling to places like Russia, China, and Japan.

Kazantzakis achieved many great things in his career. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature nine different years. In 1957, he lost the prize by only one single vote. The winner was Albert Camus. Camus later said that Kazantzakis deserved the prize much more. Kazantzakis also served in the Greek government as a Minister. He even led a group that helped translate books for UNESCO.

He left a lasting mark on the world.
