He created over 1,000 musical works during his long life. His music is known for mixing classical styles with Greek folk songs. He called this idea "metasymphonic music." This style used big orchestras alongside traditional Greek instruments. He wanted to give Greek music a sense of dignity. Many people see him as Greece's most famous composer.

Creating music was a lifelong journey for him. He grew up hearing Greek folk music and religious songs. As a child, he even taught himself to write songs. He did this before he even had real instruments. He took his first formal music lessons in Patras and Pyrgos. Later, he studied in Paris at the Conservatory. There, he learned musical analysis and how to conduct orchestras. He finished his studies with very high marks in 1950.

His career included many famous moments in history. In 1964, he wrote the music for the film Zorba the Greek. The main song, "Zorba's Dance," is now a symbol for Greece. It is also known as the Syrtaki dance.

He also wrote music for the films Z and Serpico. His work on Z earned him a BAFTA award. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and a Grammy. He even wrote the Mauthausen Trilogy about the Holocaust.

Life was often difficult for Theodorakis because of his politics. He was a member of the Communist Party of Greece. In 1967, a military group called a junta took power.

The leaders banned his music and even banned people from listening to it. He was arrested and spent time in jail. He was also sent away to live in exile in Paris. While there, he had to stay in a hospital for tuberculosis.

He eventually returned to Greece in July 1974.

Huge crowds cheered for him when he arrived home. He stayed very active in Greek public life for many years. He served as a member of Parliament several times. He also worked as a government minister from 1990 to 1992. In this role, he worked to support culture and education. He lived to be 95 years old, passing away in 2021.
