Costa-Gavras is a famous film director, writer, and producer. He is known for making political films that feel like exciting mysteries. These movies often look at big ideas like law, justice, and how leaders use power. He mixes serious world issues with the fast pace of a thriller. This way, people can learn about history while watching a gripping story. His work often focuses on the struggles of people living under tough governments.

Making these films involves a special way of storytelling. He often uses a style that looks like a documentary. A documentary is a film that shows real-life events as they happen. This technique makes the audience feel like they are right there in the scene. It can feel like the camera is just discovering things as they occur. This style makes the political conflicts feel very personal and urgent. He uses this to bring huge world events down to a human level.

Costa-Gavras was born in Loutra Iraias, Greece, in 1933. His family lived in a village in the Peloponnese during the Second World War. Later, they moved to Athens after the war ended. Because of his father's political history, he could not study at a university in Greece. He moved to France and began studying literature at the Sorbonne in 1951. In 1956, he left university to study film at the French school IDHEC. He later worked as an assistant to directors like René Clair.

He has made many important movies throughout his long career. His 1969 film Z is one of his most famous works. It tells a story about a murder in Greece and won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. Another big success was his 1982 film Missing. This movie is about a man who disappears in Chile and also won an Oscar. He won many other awards, such as the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. He has even served as the president of the Cinémathèque Française twice.

Many modern filmmakers look up to his work today. Famous directors like Steven Soderbergh and Ben Affleck have said he inspired them. Even the movie The French Connection used ideas from his style. His influence is seen in many different types of stories. His children, Romain and Alexandre, have also become film directors themselves. This shows how much filmmaking runs in his family. His legacy continues through the many directors he helped shape.
