Making movies in Greece has many steps. It started with very short clips in the late 1800s. In 1906, the Manakis brothers began recording movies in Macedonia.

Today, filmmakers use many tools to create new stories.

The history of Greek film has many ups and downs. Wars and politics sometimes made it hard to work. During the German occupation in World War II, the industry struggled. However, a producer named Philopimin Finos started Finos Films in 1942.

This studio became very successful later on. After a period of rules and censorship, democracy returned in the mid-1970s. This change helped the film industry flourish once again.

The 1950s and 1960s were a "Golden Age" for Greek movies. More than sixty films were made every single year.

Many famous people worked during this time. The film Never on Sunday was a big hit in 1960. It won an Academy Award for its song.

Another famous movie was Zorba the Greek in 1964. It won three Academy Awards and was a huge success.

Greek cinema keeps changing and finding new ways to grow. In the 1990s, younger directors made movies with a faster pace. Even when money was hard to find, new styles appeared. Some people call this the "Greek Weird Wave."
