Manos Hatzidakis was one of the most important Greek composers of all time. A composer is a person who creates and writes musical pieces. He was famous for a style called éntekhno. This style helped connect modern music with traditional Greek sounds. He wanted his music to reveal truths rather than just entertain people. Through his songs, radio shows, and books, he shaped much of Greek culture.

His music often used many different layers of sound. He was a master of the piano and wrote many pieces for it. One way he worked was by using poetry in his songs. He set the words of poets like Nikos Gatsos to beautiful music. He also studied rembetika, which are urban folk songs from Greek cities. He turned these folk styles into serious piano works like Six Popular Pictures.

Manos was born on October 23, 1925, in Xanthi, Greece. His father was a lawyer from the island of Crete. When Manos was a young boy, his father died. His mother moved him to Athens to live in a much poorer home. He studied music theory between 1940 and 1943. He also studied philosophy at the University of Athens. During the war, he joined a group called EPON to help the Greek Resistance.

His career brought him great fame and many big moments. In 1960, he wrote the song "Never on Sunday" for a movie. This song won him an Academy Award in 1961. However, he refused to collect the award. He felt the movie did not show the city of Athens correctly. He also started a music competition in 1962 to help new composers. The first winner of his contest was Iannis Xenakis in 1963.

Manos spent his life supporting the arts in many ways. He lived in the United States from 1966 to 1972. During this time, he wrote the song cycle Magnus Eroticus. When he returned to Greece, he held many leadership roles. He led the Athens State Orchestra and the Greek National Opera. In 1989, he started the Orchestra of Colours to play music by Greek composers. He died in Athens on June 15, 1994, at age 68.
