Young Astor began taking music lessons very early. In 1933, he studied with a pianist named Béla Wilda. This teacher helped him play music by Bach on his bandoneon. Later, he studied orchestration with the composer Alberto Ginastera. He even practiced by listening to orchestras rehearse at the Teatro Colón. He worked hard by playing in tango clubs at night. This helped him master many different ways to make music.

Astor's life took him to many different places. He was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 1921.
