He was born in 1860 in Camprodon, Spain. Albéniz was a child prodigy, which means he was incredibly gifted at a very young age. He began performing music when he was only four years old. By the time he was nine, he was touring northern Spain with his father. Some stories say he traveled to the United States by stowing away on a ship. While that might be a myth, he did travel the world very early. By age 15, he was giving concerts all over the globe.

His music is special because it captures the feeling of Spain. He used many Spanish folk music ideas in his piano pieces. He wanted his music to have color, sunlight, and the flavor of olives. He even used styles from cante jondo, which is a deep and serious type of singing. His piano music often mimics the sound of a guitar. He used dance rhythms and special scales to make his songs feel authentic. One of his most famous works is called Asturias (Leyenda). Even though he wrote it for the piano, many guitar players love to play it today.

Albéniz learned from many great teachers throughout his life. In 1876, he studied at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. He later went to Hungary to meet the famous composer Franz Liszt. In 1883, he met a teacher named Felip Pedrell. Pedrell was very important because he inspired Albéniz to write more Spanish music. This helped Albéniz find his own unique voice. He also married Rosina Jordana Lagarriga, who was a former student of his. They had two children, Alfonso and Laura, who grew up to be successful in their own ways.

As he grew older, Albéniz wrote many important pieces. Between 1905 and 1908, he wrote his final masterpiece called Iberia. This is a collection of twelve piano "impressions." He also wrote musical comedies and operas like Merlin. During the 1890s, he lived in big cities like London and Paris. He was a very busy performer and conductor during this time. In his later years, he suffered from a kidney disease called Bright's disease. Even while he was sick, he continued to write beautiful music. He died in France in 1909 at the age of 48. Just before he died, the French government gave him the Legion of Honour.

Today, the music of Albéniz is still heard all over the world. His style influenced other famous composers like Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel. Many of his piano songs have been changed so they can be played on the classical guitar. Pieces like Granada, Sevilla, and Mallorca are very popular for guitarists. You might even hear his music in movies or songs by rock bands. For example, the band The Doors used his music in their song "Spanish Caravan." His legacy lives on through the Fundación Isaac Albéniz, which helps promote Spanish music.
