He first studied in Barcelona with teachers like Francisco Jurnet and Joan Baptista Pujol. In 1887, he traveled to Paris to study even more. He took private lessons from a professor named Charles-Wilfrid de Bériot. This teacher taught him how to make very refined sounds with the piano pedals. He also helped Granados learn how to make up music on the spot. This skill is called improvisation. Granados later studied with Felip Pedrell before returning to Barcelona in 1889.

Granados had a very successful career with many big wins. In 1903, he entered a contest in Madrid. The contest was organized by Tomás Bretón at the Madrid Royal Conservatory. Granados submitted a piece called Allegro de concierto, Op. 46. The judges gave him the win with an almost unanimous vote. This win brought him a prize of 500 pesetas. It also made him famous across the whole country. In 1911, he performed his famous Goyescas suite for the first time. This work was based on paintings by the artist Francisco Goya.

He also helped many other musicians learn their craft. Granados started a piano school in Barcelona called the Acadèmia Granados. Many talented pianists studied there, such as Alicia de Larrocha and Frank Marshall. His music can be found in many different styles. He wrote romantic pieces like Escenas Románticas. He also wrote Spanish-style music like Danzas Españolas. Some of his piano songs were even played on the classical guitar. You can still hear his music today through old player piano rolls. These were recorded for the Aeolian Company in New York.

Granados' life ended during the difficult time of World War I. He was traveling on a ship called the SS Sussex in the English Channel. The ship was hit by a torpedo from a German navy submarine. This happened while he was traveling toward Dieppe, France. Granados died while trying to save his wife, Amparo. His personal letters and papers are kept safe today. You can find them in the Library of Catalonia and the Museu de la Música de Barcelona. These items help us learn about his life and his friends. He wrote letters to famous people like Pablo Casals.
