He is often called the "grandfather of jazz violinists." This title shows how much he influenced other players. He was known for his skill and his bright sound. Grappelli spent his whole life making music. He even performed in concerts well into his eighties. His music brought people together in many different ways. He helped change how people heard the violin in jazz.

Grappelli's journey with the violin began when he was twelve. His father bought him a three-quarter-sized violin by pawning a suit. Although he took lessons, he mostly learned by himself. He later studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. He graduated there in 1923 with a second-tier medal. After that, he spent time playing for money on the streets. He eventually played for six hours every day in a theater. He played music to accompany silent films in an orchestra pit.

His musical style changed when he discovered jazz music. He heard jazz while visiting a brasserie called Le Boudon. He was also inspired by a violinist named Joe Venuti. Venuti played at the Ambassador Hotel in 1928. Grappelli loved the way Venuti moved his bow. Later, Grappelli briefly played the piano in a big band. A musician named Grégor encouraged him to return to the violin. This led him to meet the great guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1931.

In 1934, Grappelli and Reinhardt formed a famous group. It was called the Quintette du Hot Club de France. This band was special because it used only string instruments. The group included Louis Vola on bass. It also featured Joseph Reinhardt and Roger Chaput on guitar. They performed in places like the Hôtel Claridge in Paris. The band stopped playing together in 1939 due to World War II. Grappelli stayed in London during the war years.

Grappelli's career lasted for many decades across the globe. He played with classical musicians like Yehudi Menuhin. They recorded three albums together between 1972 and 1976. Grappelli also played on a Pink Floyd song in 1975. He even composed music for French films. In 1997, he received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. He continued to tour until the very end of his life.
