He was born on January 23, 1910, in Belgium. Most of his life was spent in France. He was part of the Romani people. People call his style "gypsy jazz." He was one of the first big jazz talents in Europe. Many musicians say he changed how people play the guitar.

Django learned to play music by watching others. At age 12, he received a banjo-guitar as a gift. He taught himself how to play by mimicking other musicians. By age 15, he was making money playing in cafés. In 1928, a fire in his home changed his life. The fire badly burned his left hand. Doctors thought he could never play the guitar again.

Django did not let the injury stop him. He retaught himself to play in a new way. He used his index and middle fingers for most notes. He only used his injured fingers to play chords. He used a new six-string steel-strung acoustic guitar. This helped him create a very special sound. He became a master of this difficult style. His skill was truly amazing to everyone who heard it.

In 1934, he formed the Quintette du Hot Club de France.

He played with a violinist named Stéphane Grappelli. This group was special because it used stringed instruments. Most jazz bands used horns like trumpets. The quintet included guitars and a double bass. Django also played with famous American musicians. He even toured the United States with Duke Ellington in 1946.

Django wrote many songs that people still love today. Some of his famous songs are "Minor Swing" and "Nuages." These songs are now standards in gypsy jazz. People still celebrate his life with festivals in Europe and the U.S. A movie about his life was even made in 2017. He died in 1953 at the age of 43. His music lives on through many new players. He remains a legend in the world of jazz.
