. People often call it a fiddle, especially when it is used in folk music. It is the smallest member of the violin family. Because it is small, it has the highest pitch of the group. This high sound is called a soprano voice. You can hear violins in many places, from big orchestras to small jazz bands. They are also very important in country, bluegrass, and even Indian or Iranian music

Playing the violin involves a few different special ways to make sound. Most players use a bow to draw across the four strings

. You can also play by plucking the strings with your fingers. This quick plucking is called pizzicato. Some musicians even use a special move called col legno. This means they strike the strings with the wooden side of the bow. These different ways help the player show many different feelings through the music.

Making a violin is a very careful job for a skilled maker. A person who builds or fixes these instruments is called a luthier

. They use different types of wood to get the best sound. The top part, or soundboard, is often made of spruce wood. The back and the sides are usually made of maple. The fingerboard is often made of ebony because it is a very hard wood. Luthiers even use special animal hide glue to hold the pieces together. This glue is good because it can be removed with hot water if a repair is needed.

The history of the violin goes back many hundreds of years. It first appeared in its modern form in northern Italy during the 16th century. Some people think its ancestors might have come from nomadic cultures in Central Asia. One of the oldest surviving violins is called the Charles IX. It was made for a French king by the maker Andrea Amati in 1560

. Over time, makers changed the shape and the neck to make the sound even more powerful. These changes helped the violin become the standard instrument we know today.

Some violins are so special that they are worth a huge amount of money. Famous families like the Stradivari, Guarneri, and Amati made incredible instruments in Italy. These makers lived in places like Cremona and Brescia between the 16th and 18th centuries. A very famous violin called the "Lady Blunt" was sold for £9.8 million in 2011. People still study these old instruments to learn how to make perfect sounds. Even today, many people try to make new violins that sound just like the old masters
