Stradivari used many skills to make his beautiful tools. He was very good at carving instrument heads. He also carefully inserted purfling, which is a decorative edge. Some people think he started as a woodworker. He may have lived with a woodcarver named Francesco Pescaroli. This might explain why his instruments have such lovely decorations. He worked with great precision and skill.

Historians study how Stradivari learned his craft. He may have been an apprentice to Nicola Amati. Some experts think he might have learned from Francesco Rugeri instead. His first surviving violin was made in 1666. He likely began his training between the ages of 12 and 14. It is hard to know his early childhood for sure. This is because many old records were lost during wars.
