His book was very important in Europe. It was even translated into Dutch and French. Musicians still look at his work to learn about old styles of playing.

Leopold's life involved many different roles. He grew up in Augsburg and studied many subjects like science and logic. He even liked using telescopes and microscopes. His parents wanted him to be a priest, but he chose music instead. He moved to Salzburg to study philosophy and law at a university. However, he was expelled from the university for not attending his science classes. In 1740, he started his career as a professional musician. He worked as a violinist and an assistant to a count.

Only two of their seven children lived to be adults. One was a daughter named Nannerl and the other was Wolfgang. Leopold discovered that his children were child prodigies. This means they were amazingly talented at a very young age. He began teaching Nannerl the keyboard when she was seven. Wolfgang soon began to copy his sister and showed great skill too.

Because of their talent, the family went on long concert tours.

They traveled through many places like Munich, Vienna, Paris, and London. They played music for many important and wealthy people. These trips were a big part of their lives. Sometimes the family made money, but travel was very expensive. Sometimes they did not make any money because they became sick. Leopold spent almost all his time teaching and traveling during this time.

When the family was at home, they found ways to have fun.

They lived in a large house with eight rooms. One large room was used for teaching and for family concerts. They also played a game called *Bölzlschiessen*. In this game, they shot airguns at funny paper targets. Leopold also worked hard to help his daughter Nannerl later in life. He sent her news and helped her manage her home. He remained a very busy and involved father until he died in 1787.
