Leopold's life involved many different roles. He grew up in Augsburg and studied many subjects like science and logic. He even liked using telescopes and microscopes. His parents wanted him to be a priest, but he chose music instead. He moved to Salzburg to study philosophy and law at a university. Only two of their seven children lived to be adults. One was a daughter named Nannerl and the other was Wolfgang. Leopold discovered that his children were child prodigies. This means they were amazingly talented at a very young age. He began teaching Nannerl the keyboard when she was seven. Wolfgang soon began to copy his sister and showed great skill too.

Because of their talent, the family went on long concert tours. They traveled through many places like Munich, Vienna, Paris, and London. They played music for many important and wealthy people. These trips were a big part of their lives. Sometimes the family made money, but travel was very expensive. Sometimes they did not make any money because they became sick. Leopold spent almost all his time teaching and traveling during this time.

When the family was at home, they found ways to have fun.

While many people know him as the father of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he was a significant musical figure in his own right. He was a skilled pedagogue, which is a term for a person who is an expert teacher. His most lasting contribution to music was his comprehensive treatise on violin playing. This book, titled *Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule*, was published in 1756.

It became a vital resource for musicians across Europe. The work was translated into Dutch and French to reach more students. Today, musicians still study it to understand 18th-century performance practice.

Leopold's early life was shaped by many different subjects. He was born in Augsburg on 14 November 1719. As a youth, he studied logic, science, and theology at a Jesuit school. He even developed a personal interest in telescopes and microscopes. Although his parents intended for him to become a Catholic priest, Leopold chose a different path. He moved to Salzburg to study philosophy and jurisprudence, which is the study of law. However, he was expelled from the Benedictine University in 1739. His expulsion record shows he rarely attended his natural science classes.

His professional musical career began in earnest in 1740. He started as a violinist and a valet, or personal assistant, to Count Johann Baptist. During this time, he published his first musical work, the six Trio Sonatas, Opus 1. He performed the difficult task of copper engraving the music himself. In 1743, he joined the musical establishment of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. He served as a fourth violinist and taught violin to cathedral choirboys. Over time, he was promoted to second violinist and eventually to deputy Kapellmeister. A Kapellmeister is a person in charge of music for a royal or religious court.

In 1747, Leopold married Anna Maria Pertl.

They settled in Salzburg and lived in an apartment on Getreidegasse. The couple had seven children in less than eight years. Sadly, only two of these children survived into adulthood. These two children were his daughter, Nannerl, and his son, Wolfgang. Leopold discovered their extraordinary talents around 1759. Nannerl was seven when he began her keyboard lessons. Wolfgang, then a toddler, began imitating his sister by picking out notes on the keyboard.

This discovery changed the family's life forever. Leopold recognized his children as child prodigies, meaning they had exceptional skills at a very young age. To share their talent, he organized extensive concert tours across Europe. They traveled to cities like Munich, Vienna, Paris, and London. They performed for both the public and the aristocracy. These tours were a massive undertaking that required constant travel. Scholars debate the financial success of these trips. Some believe the tours were lucrative and profitable. Others suggest the high costs of travel and illness meant they only covered living expenses.

Because of these tours, Leopold's own career changed. He spent so much time teaching and traveling that he could not advance further in Salzburg. He was repeatedly passed over for the top Kapellmeister position. Nannerl claimed he eventually gave up his own composition and violin instruction to focus on his children. When the family was home, they enjoyed a large eight-room house. They used a large room for teaching and for domestic concerts. They also enjoyed *Bölzlschiessen*, a game where they shot airguns at humorous paper targets.

In his later years, Leopold remained deeply involved in his children's lives. He worked hard to find professional positions for Wolfgang. After his wife died in Paris in 1778, he focused heavily on supporting Nannerl. Even after she married and moved to St. Gilgen, he helped her manage her household. He sent her news and helped organize musicians so she could play music. He even sent regular letters to her about her son, whom he called "Little Leopold." Leopold Mozart died in 1787, leaving behind a complex legacy as a teacher, composer, and devoted father.
