He was born in Rohrau, Austria, in 1732. His father was a wheelwright and a musician. His mother had worked as a palace cook. They sang together often with their neighbors. When Haydn was six, he went to live with a schoolmaster.

This was so he could receive serious musical training. Life was not always easy for him there. He often felt hungry and his clothes were dirty. However, he learned to play the violin and the harpsichord. He also learned to sing in a church choir.

After his training, Haydn moved to the big city of Vienna.

He worked as a singer at St. Stephen's Cathedral for nine years. He learned much about music just by being in such a famous place. Later, he had a hard time working as a freelance musician. He worked many different jobs to survive. He was a music teacher and a street performer. He even worked as a helper for an Italian composer.

During this time, he studied very hard on his own. He practiced music theory and studied the works of other great composers. This hard work helped him become a master of music.

In 1761, Haydn began working for the wealthy Esterházy family.

His job was to be the music director. This meant he led the orchestra and wrote new music. He even wrote music for a special instrument called the baryton. Because he worked far from other composers, he had to be very original. This helped his unique style grow and spread. His music was published and became very popular in many countries.

Later in life, Haydn became a famous star.
