He was a prolific Austrian composer who helped define many musical structures. Because of his massive influence, he is often called the "Father of the Symphony" and the "Father of the String Quartet."

He was also a mentor to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and a teacher to Ludwig van Beethoven. His work helped evolve chamber music, which is music played by small groups. This includes the string quartet and the piano trio. His music remains a vital part of the musical world today.

Haydn was born in 1732 in the village of Rohrau, Austria.

His family was musical, though his parents could not read music. His father, Mathias, was a wheelwright and a folk musician who played the harp. His mother, Maria, had worked as a cook in a local palace. When Haydn was six, he moved to Hainburg to apprentice with a schoolmaster named Johann Matthias Frankh. This move was necessary because his parents knew he needed serious training. Life in the Frankh household was difficult for the young boy. He often felt hungry and was sometimes humiliated by the poor state of his clothing.

Despite these hardships, Haydn developed great skill on the violin and harpsichord.

In 1739, he was noticed by Georg Reutter the Younger, the music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Haydn moved to Vienna in 1740 to work as a chorister. He lived in the Kapellhaus next to the cathedral for nine years. While he learned a lot from the professional environment, Reutter provided very little formal instruction in music theory. Haydn actually had only two lessons in composition during his entire time there. He motivated himself to sing well to earn invitations to perform for wealthy audiences.

By 1749, Haydn could no longer sing high choral parts as his voice matured.

After a disciplinary incident involving a prank, he was dismissed from the cathedral. This began a difficult period as a freelance musician. He worked as a teacher, a street serenader, and a valet-accompanist for Nicola Porpora. From Porpora, Haydn learned the true fundamentals of composition. He also studied music theory independently using the text "Gradus ad Parnassum" by Johann Joseph Fux. He spent many hours studying the keyboard sonatas of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach to improve his craft.

Haydn eventually moved from freelance work to stable aristocratic patronage.

He first worked for Baron Carl Josef Fürnberg, where he wrote his first string quartets. In 1761, he joined the service of the wealthy Esterházy family. He started as a Vice-Kapellmeister, which is a deputy music director. When the previous director died in 1766, Haydn became the full Kapellmeister.

He spent much of his career at the family's grand palaces, including Eszterháza in Hungary.

His duties were immense, including composing, running the orchestra, and mounting operas.

Working for the Esterházy family provided Haydn with a unique creative environment. Because the family's estate was somewhat isolated, Haydn felt he was "forced to become original."

He had daily access to his own orchestra, which allowed him to experiment. One specific task involved writing music for Prince Nikolaus, who played the baryton. The baryton is a rare instrument similar to a bass viol but with extra plucked strings. Haydn composed about 200 works for this instrument over ten years. This period of isolation and resources helped his musical style develop into something widely celebrated.

After the death of Nikolaus Esterházy in 1790, Haydn's career reached new heights.

He was no longer bound to the service of a single patron and traveled to London and Vienna. He became a famous performer before the public. His music was being published and sold in shops, making him a celebrity across Europe. In his final years, between 1803 and 1809, his health declined significantly. He suffered from a state of debility that prevented him from composing. He died in Vienna in 1809 at the age of 77.
