Giovanni Battista Guadagnini was a master luthier from Italy. A luthier is someone who makes string instruments. He is considered one of the finest craftsmen in history. His family was well known for making violins, guitars, and mandolins. Many people believe he was the last of the great historical makers. His instruments are famous for their wonderful sound.

Even today, his work is highly valued by musicians around the world.

Guadagnini's career can be split into four distinct periods. These periods match the four cities where he lived and worked. He started in Piacenza, an area in Northern Italy. Then he moved to Milan to join a larger music scene. Later, he worked in Parma for a time. Finally, he spent his last years working in Turin.

In each city, his style changed based on the materials he could find and the needs of the local musicians.

We do not know much about his very early years. He was born on June 23, 1711, in a small place called Bilegno. He likely learned his craft through an apprenticeship with a local woodworker. His first violins began to appear around the year 1742. While in Milan, some of his instruments had labels linked to Cremona. Cremona was the home of famous makers like Amati and Stradivari. However, there is no proof that Guadagnini ever lived in Cremona himself.

In his later years, Guadagnini had a very important partnership. He moved to Turin and worked with a collector named Count Cozio. The Count bought most of the instruments Guadagnini made during this time. Cozio also provided the wood and other materials for the work.

Because of the Count, Guadagnini began to copy the style of Stradivari. This happened because the Count gave him access to examples of Stradivari's work. Guadagnini died in Turin on September 18, 1786.

Guadagnini's instruments are incredibly rare and expensive today. Some of his violins have sold for over $2,000,000 at auction. Many famous performers use his instruments to play beautiful music. For example, the cellist Nicolas Altstaedt plays a cello made in 1749. The violinist Chloe Chua plays a violin made in 1753.

Even the Australian String Quartet uses instruments made by him. His work connects the history of old craftsmanship to the music played in concert halls today.
