He was a composer, a teacher, and a maker of wind instruments. He belonged to a special family of musicians called a dynasty. This family was well known for making and playing woodwind instruments. Jacques was perhaps the most famous member of this group. He was born in Paris, France, in 1674. His father, Martin Hotteterre, taught him how to play and build instruments. Jacques became a master at playing the flute. He also played the bassoon, the oboe, and the musette.

Jacques helped change how the transverse flute was built. In the past, these flutes were made as one single piece. This could make them hard to use or carry. Jacques may have helped move to a new design. This design used three separate parts instead of one. The first part is the head, which has the mouthpiece. The second part is the body, which has the finger holes. The third part is the foot, which has a hole for a low note.

This new way of building flutes made them easier to tune. It also made them much easier to carry around.

His life took him to many important places. Early in his career, he lived and studied in Rome. Because of this, people gave him the nickname "le Romain." This means "the Roman." He worked for Prince Francesco Ruspoli in Rome for two years. Later, he moved back to France to work for the King. He held a very important job in the King's Grande Écurie. In 1717, he also became a player of the flute for chamber music.

Jacques was also a very talented teacher. He wrote books to help other people learn how to play. In 1707, he published a book about the flute, recorder, and oboe. In 1719, he published a book called L'Art de préluder sur la flûte traversière. This was the very first flute manual in all of Europe. Many people used his books to study music. He also wrote a book for the musette in 1737. His music helped people learn how to play beautiful songs.

His family had a long history of making music. His grandfather, Jean, was a great player and builder too. Some people believe Jean may have helped create the oboe. Jacques's father, Martin, helped improve how the musette was made. Even Jacques's son, Jean-Baptiste, continued the family tradition.

Jacques-Martin Hotteterre lived a long life of music. He died in Paris in 1763. His work helped change the way people play and build instruments today.
