He belonged to a big family of makers. They all made and played wind instruments. His father, Martin, taught him how to play and build them. Jacques was a great flute player. He also played the bassoon and the oboe. He wrote many new songs for the flute. This helped more people enjoy the instrument.

Jacques was a very good teacher, too. He wrote books to help others learn. One book was the first flute manual in Europe. It was used by many people.

He also helped change how flutes were made. Before, flutes were one long piece. Jacques helped make them in three parts. These parts are the head, the body, and the foot. This new way made flutes easier to carry. It also made them easier to tune.

His family was very important in music. His grandfather, Jean, may have helped create the oboe. Jacques lived in Paris for most of his life. He died there in 1763.
