He learned to play from his father at age nine. He later studied at the Paris Conservatoire. Taffanel became a great soloist. He also played in large orchestras. He was the first flute player to lead an orchestra at the Paris Opéra. He was also the chief conductor for the Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.

As a teacher, Taffanel changed how students played. He taught a smooth style. He used a light vibrato, which is a tiny shake in the sound. He also brought back old music. He taught his students songs by Bach. Before this, many French players ignored Bach. Taffanel helped make this old music popular again in France.

He was also a composer. This means he wrote his own music. He wrote pieces for the flute and for groups of wind instruments. He even started a book to help players learn. His students finished the book after he died. People still use his book to study today. Taffanel died in Paris in 1908. He left a big mark on the world of music.
