He learned music before he could even read. He grew up in a family that loved music. His father was an organist at many churches.

Rameau was famous for two main things. First, he wrote books about music rules. His most important book was the Treatise on Harmony. This book helped people understand how sounds work together. Second, he was a master of the harpsichord. This is a keyboard instrument with strings inside.

Later in life, Rameau wrote grand operas. These are large shows with singing and acting. His first opera was called Hippolyte et Aricie. It was very new and special. Some people loved his new style. Other people thought it was too different. He even worked with the writer Voltaire.
