People knew him by his stage name, Le Pétomane. He was a professional flatulist. This means he used gas to make sounds. Many people thought he made gas in his belly. But he actually moved air into his body. He used strong muscles to control the air.

He performed at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. He could make sounds like loud cannons. He could even sound like a thunderstorm. He used a rubber tube to play songs. He could play the song "O Sole Mio" this way. He could even blow out a candle from far away. Famous people came to see his show. This included a Prince and a King. Later, he opened his own traveling show. He called it the Theatre Pompadour. He also worked as a baker. He even opened a biscuit factory. His life has inspired many musicals and films. Some plays about him were even made in London. His story is still told today.
