He was born in 1705. He was a master of the musette. This is a bagpipe-like instrument. He did not just play it. He also made them. He even made them with more notes in the low parts.

Nicolas played in the Paris Opera orchestra. He also played in a royal band for oboes. He was a very popular teacher. He even taught Princess Victoire how to play the musette. Many wealthy people wanted to learn from him. They loved playing rustic instruments. It felt like a romantic dream of country life.

Nicolas wrote many songs for people to play for fun. Some songs were called "Amusements champêtres." This means "pastoral amusements." He also wrote songs about battles. He once went on a military trip with a prince.

He also liked music from Italy. In 1737, he did something secret. He and his cousin published music under the name Antonio Vivaldi. They wanted the musette to seem more famous.
