He lived from February 20, 1705, to August 6, 1782. Chédeville was a master of the musette. The musette is a bagpipe-like instrument used in French baroque music. He was highly respected in his field. He even earned the title of maître de musette des Mesdames de France. This title shows his high status among the French aristocracy. He was a central figure in the musical culture of his era.

Chédeville's musical expertise covered several technical areas. He was a skilled player of both the oboe and the musette. He also worked as a maker of instruments. As a maker, he improved the musette by extending its compass. This means he added more notes to the bass range. He was able to reach down to c', which is the middle C. This technical improvement allowed for more complex musical performances. His work as a maker and a player helped define the sound of the musette.

His professional career involved several prestigious positions. In the 1720s, he played in the Paris Opera orchestra. Following the death of Jean Hotteterre in 1732, he took a role in Les Grands Hautbois. This was the royal oboe band. He retired from the opera in July 1748 but occasionally returned to play the musette. He was a very popular teacher for the wealthy. For example, he taught Princess Victoire starting around 1750. His teaching helped spread the popularity of the musette among the elite.

Chédeville composed many works for different musical purposes. Many of his pieces were intended for wealthy amateur musicians. The French aristocracy enjoyed playing rustic instruments. They used them to enjoy a romantic fantasy of peasant life. His first published works were titled Amusements champêtres, or pastoral amusements, in 1729. He used different names for himself in his publications. He called himself "Chedeville le jeune" and later "Chedeville le cadet." His compositions ranged from simple dances to more advanced technical pieces.

Some of his musical collections were quite unique. His Op. 6, titled Amusemens de Bellone, featured pieces named after battles. These were inspired by a military campaign with the Prince of Conti. He also wrote more serious music with Italian influences in Op. 7. This was his only collection written specifically for the flute, oboe, or violin. He produced many other works, such as Op. 10, Les idées françoises. His compositions often included accompaniment known as continuo. These works helped provide entertainment for his many listeners.

Chédeville was also involved in a famous musical forgery.

In 1737, he made a secret agreement with his cousin, Jean-Noël Marchand. They published Chédeville's own music under the name of Antonio Vivaldi. The collection was called Il pastor fido. Chédeville provided the money and kept the profits. This was likely done to give the musette the prestige of a famous composer. Scholars doubted the work for a long time. However, musicologist Philippe Lescat proved it was a forgery in 1989. Chédeville also arranged Vivaldi's The Four Seasons for the musette and other instruments.

Despite his early success, Chédeville faced significant financial struggles later in life. He experienced many difficulties toward the end of his career. In 1774, he had to sign over ten houses to his creditors. He also separated from his wife during this time. He resigned from Les Grands Hautbois in 1777. In 1778, he petitioned for bankruptcy. He died in Paris in 1782. Even in 1790, lawyers were still working to settle his legal affairs. His life reflects both the heights of artistic fame and the hardships of financial loss.
