He is best known for his significant contributions to ballet and opera. His musical style is often defined by wit, charm, and elegance. Delibes helped transform the role of music in dance performances. Before his era, ballet music was often secondary to the dancers. His compositions gave the music a much greater importance in modern ballet. This shift helped establish the music as a vital element of the art form.

Delibes was born on February 21, 1836, in Saint-Germain-du-Val. He grew up in a musical environment. His mother was a talented amateur musician. She was the daughter of an opera singer and the niece of an organist. After his father died in 1847, the family moved to Paris. Delibes entered the Conservatoire de Paris at age twelve. He studied music theory, piano, organ, and harmony. At age eighteen, he studied composition under Adolphe Adam.

His early career involved several different musical roles. He served as a church organist until 1871. He also worked as a critic and an inspector of school music. Delibes spent time as an accompanist and chorus master at the Opéra. These roles helped him prepare for many famous operas. He also composed many light comic operas called opérettes. During the 1850s and 1860s, he wrote about one comic opera per year. His second opera, *Deux vieilles gardes*, was a major success. Critics praised his gift for witty melodies and a light touch.

Delibes achieved public recognition through ballet music. In 1866, he was commissioned to write music for the ballet *La Source*.

His work on this ballet was so melodic that it eclipsed the work of Ludwig Minkus. This success led to his most famous ballets. *Coppélia* premiered at the Opéra in May 1870. It became an immediate and lasting success. He followed this with the grand mythological ballet *Sylvia* in 1876. Both *Coppélia* and *Sylvia* remain core works in international ballet repertoires today.

Delibes also sought to compose serious vocal works. He wrote a collection of songs known as mélodies in 1872. These included pieces like "Myrto" and "Bonjour Suzon." In 1880, he premiered the serious opera *Jean de Nivelle*. Critics praised the precise quality of his melodies. His most famous achievement was the opera *Lakmé*, which premiered in 1883.

This work is considered his masterpiece. It features the well-known "Flower Duet." *Lakmé* was a commercial success in Paris. It later traveled to London in 1885 and New York in 1886.

In his later years, Delibes shared his knowledge with others. He joined the faculty of the Conservatoire de Paris in 1881. He served as a professor of composition. He took his teaching duties very seriously. He was especially concerned with his students' success in the Prix de Rome. This is a prestigious musical award in France. Delibes was also elected to the Institut de France in 1884. He lived a socially secure and financially comfortable life in Paris.

Delibes died in Paris shortly before his 54th birthday. He passed away after a sudden collapse. He was working on an unfinished opera titled *Kassya* at the time.

He is buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre. His music connects the light style of early French composers to more serious genres. His works show influences from composers like Gounod and Bizet. Today, his ballets and operas continue to be performed by artists worldwide.
