He was a composer, a dancer, and an instrumentalist. His music is known for being powerful and lively. Fast movements feel energetic, while slower parts show deep emotion. He helped create the French-style opera, called tragédie en musique. This style used special poetic lines to sound natural. Lully also invented the French overture. This musical form was later used by famous composers like Bach and Handel.

Lully's music involved many different sounds and instruments. He used a large group of string players. This included violins, violas, cellos, and the basse de viole. He also used instruments like the guitar, lute, and harpsichord. For more color, he added the oboe, bassoon, flute, and recorder. His orchestra even used brass instruments and percussion like timpani and castanets.

He managed two groups of musicians. One was the Petits Violons, or "Little Violins." The other was the Grands Violons, or "Great Violins." He used the smaller group mostly for court ballets.

Lully's journey began in Florence, Italy.

He was born to Lorenzo Lulli and Caterina Del Sera around 1632. As a boy, he learned the guitar and violin. In 1646, he dressed as Harlequin for Mardi Gras. He played his violin and acted like a clown. This caught the eye of Roger de Lorraine. Guise took the boy to Paris. Lully served as a chamber boy for Mademoiselle de Montpensier. He learned more music from professional composers in her household.

Lully became very important at the French royal court. In 1653, he began working for the young King Louis XIV. The King later made him the music master for the royal family. In 1661, Lully became a French subject. He also married Madeleine Lambert, the daughter of a famous singer. Lully worked closely with the playwright Molière. Together, they created comédie-ballets, which were plays with music and dance. Some of their famous works include Le Bourgeois gentilhomme. Lully also directed the royal opera at the Palais-Royal.

Lully's life ended in a surprising way in 1687.

During a performance of his Te Deum, he struck his foot. He was using a long staff to lead the music. The wound turned into gangrene, which is a serious infection. He refused to have his toe removed. This caused the infection to spread through his body. Lully died in Paris and was buried at Notre-Dame-des-Victoires. His sons even followed in his footsteps as royal music leaders.
